MS in Analytics - USF

USF's one-year Master of Science in Analytics (MSAN) program trains students to scrape, process, organize and analyze large data sets to identify patterns and trends. The MSAN program delivers rigorous training in the mathematical and computational techniques of big data. The boot camp is an intensive introduction to and review of the foundational knowledge and skills required for sophisticated business analysts and data scientists. Students choose two out of three intensive courses in probability and statistics, computation for analytics, and linear algebra. USF provides training in the leadership, teamwork, communication, professionalism and project execution skills that are vital for analysts and data scientists to be effective in the business world.

I am currently a data science intern at William Sonoma Inc. where I perform advanced image analysis in python. Williams-Sonoma, Inc. earns 50% of its net revenue from online and catalog orders. Due to this source of high revenue, WS has designers that specialize in ‘hand-picking’ products for photo shoots in order to create aesthetically pleasing photos based on color, pattern, and texture. The large distribution of WS media has thus created the need to assemble the photos more efficiently distinguished by its features: color and pattern. There are 3 key problems regarding image analysis that I have worked on till date :

  • Classification of photos into silhouettes and lifestyles
  • Identifying object in a lifestyle setting and predicting its color
  • Recognizing patterns such as polka dots and stripes in products in images
